Both India and the UK have elevated climate, energy, and biodiversity as key focus areas for international development cooperation, driven by the increasingly urgent challenges of climate change, energy transitions, and biodiversity loss around the world. The IUKDPF supports multiple research projects across these topics, including on India’s leadership on solar internationally through the International Solar Alliance, on Indian energy investments in Africa, and on the future of low-carbon cooling technologies. We are further committed to fostering conversations between India and the UK on the challenges and opportunities in these areas, and facilitating new bilateral and trilateral collaborations.

Jonathan works on energy, development, and economic geography. His current research focuses on India’s international partnerships in the areas of energy and climate. More specifically, he is looking at India’s South-South partnerships that seek to deliver knowledge and technology exchanges on off-grid solar and distributed energy systems and on city cooling. His other research focuses are the market-based diffusion of off-grid solar products in India, the governance challenges arising from the proliferation of solar micro-grids in the global South, bottom of the pyramid capitalism, and the political economy of electricity distribution.
